FED: Screening for bowel cancer, diabetes

Federal Health Minister KAY PATTERSON wants every person over the age of 50 and thosewith a family history of bowel cancer to have an annual test for the disease.

Sydney's Daily Telegraph reports a pilot program that detects possible bowel cancerwill begin later this year, identifying 80 per cent of the cancers.

Bowel cancer kills 5,000 Australians each year.

Ms PATTERSON told the paper she's also planning screening tests for diabetes, since500,000 people who have the disease are undiagnosed.

The Daily Telegraph says Ms PATTERSON recognised the two key health complaints neededfurther research and tests so the killers could be identified early.
