Vic: Transurban defends toll evasion fine increase
Transurban has defended an increase in fines for repeat toll evaders using the CityLink
tunnel, saying drivers have had enough time to get used to the system.
Transurban spokeswoman JENI COUTTS says increasing fines for repeat toll evaders from
$25 to $100 is justified as motorists have had enough time to learn the rules.
She says CityLink has been up and running for more than a year and there are plenty
of places to find out about it.
Fines will quadruple from next Tuesday.
Up to 45,000 motorists have been fined every month for dodging tolls, with 52,000 drivers
fined last year for four or more offences.
The Royal Automobile Club of Victoria says the increases are heavy-handed as the government
hasn't done enough to educate drivers, particularly visiting drivers.
